This blog was formerly dedicated in 2009 to my Dad who died of Alzheimer's in 2013. It's been three years now...and I find myself missing blogging...so I am re-inventing my blog... because, after all, life is about moving through, and going forward...

Dad Taken To The Hospital...

I received a phone call from the nursing home this morning.  Dad had been throwing up since after breakfast.  His doctor prescribed some medication to help with the nausea, but it did not seem to work. He had no temperature, but was very pale and weak.

The nurse told me they called the ambulance to transport him to the hospital for lab work and tests.  I had attempted to talk with Dad, but he was too sick.  The nurse relayed my message, telling him we loved him and I would call him at the hospital.

I called at 3:30pm and his nurse could not tell me if he would be admitted.  She said he had not thrown up since his arrival.  They had him on some nausea medication and it seemed to be working.

I asked if I could speak with Dad.  She returned to the phone, telling me Dad said to tell me he loves me, he is doing fine and he is up to his old tricks... The nurse laughed and said he was a huge flirt.  I laughed too, telling her to be prepared!

I just checked with his nurse at 5pm.  She told me his potassium was a little high, so he was given medication to lower it.  His glucose was slightly elevated, but everything else looked good.  She suggested the nursing home encourages fluids and water.  They will be returning Dad to the nursing home.  She told me not to worry...

Thank you Lord!

I'm so glad he isn't going to be admitted! I immediately thought of that whole new chart situation and am glad that can be avoided as well.
I have a feeling your dad was a bright spot in that nurses day today!

It sounds like a good outcome to a scary situation. His positive frame of mind is such an asset to his well-being.

Thank you Lord indeed! I'm glad that the hospital was able to stabilize your dad and that he will soon be back in the home with those that he knows all around him.

Sounds like your Dad is a very strong man. Glad he got prompt and good care and back to the nursing home where I am sure they will make sure he drinks plenty. The yings and yangs are scary none the less. Sometimes one day at a time and sometimes all is ok for quite a while. Take care.

Hello Donna, thank you for dropping by my blog. This one for your dad is wonderful. We have been going through a similar situation with my father-in-law, who is 96. He's been in the hospital for over a week.
Take good care of YOURSELF, too, so that you can continue to love your dad as he so obviously deserves!
